Timothy “Kick the Backboard” Stanfill is a pastor,

author, entrepreneur, and visionary leader whose life

journey blends faith, perseverance, and cultural impact.

Raised in Springfield, Massachusetts (birthplace of the

Basketball Hall of Fame), Timothy’s story began with major

obstacles that could have ended his future: bullying, family

pain, street pressure, and learning struggles later identified

as dyslexia. Instead of quitting, he transformed adversity

into purpose, becoming a global symbol of resilience and

reinvention.

Timothy became world known for his signature

achievement—“Kicking the Backboard”—a moment that

helped define his legacy as a dunking pioneer. His path

included major development influences such as the Boys &

Girls Club, martial arts training that increased his strength

and flexibility, and relentless self-discipline that took him

from dunking a tennis ball, to a volleyball, to a basketball.

His first full basketball dunk came at age 16 in Lanett,

Alabama, and his rise continued at Petersburg High

School in Virginia, where the nickname “Kick the

Backboard” became attached to his name and his highlight clip began circulating widely. Mentored and supported by notable basketball figures—including Moses Malone and Darryl Dawkins—Timothy sharpened his game in elite summer leagues and earned recognition for both scoring and spectacular dunking. His college journey led him to the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), where he studied Political Science/Business and continued developing his athletic and leadership identity. During his UDC years, a widely publicized NCAA controversy involving participation rules resulted in a suspension referenced as “Illegal Dunks,” a season-

defining moment that later became part of his larger public narrative about perseverance, discipline, and staying ready when opportunity returns.

After college, Timothy played professional basketball overseas in Israel, gaining life experience that expanded his worldview. His career also crossed into entertainment through professional modeling and acting, including appearances connected to Spike Lee’s Malcolm X sneaker commercial (aired on BET), and other television projects. A signature dunk moment—placing his

elbow inside the rim—helped inspire the creation of the National Dunking Association of America (NDAA) identity and fueled a broader entrepreneurial vision built around preserving the legacy and culture of slam dunking.

As a builder and founder, Timothy has launched and developed multiple platforms and initiatives —including DunkTV, TestimonyTV, Slam Dunk Awards, youth mentoring programs, and community-driven dunk clinics and events. His mission has consistently been bigger than sports: using dunking as a vehicle to educate, motivate, and strengthen young people—especially those who feel overlooked or limited by circumstance.

Timothy is also a published author whose writing flows directly from his lived experience. He is the founder of Ministry Publishing Group (MPG), the publishing imprint behind several of his works—created to produce faith-based, purpose-driven resources that educate, equip, and inspire.
